Why Many Franchises Fail

If you recently started a new business that is successful, you might be considering Franchising. A lot of people franchise as a method for business expansion. It allows them to sell the rights to their product for a fee and future profits. Many people actually do quite well from franchising. And, any business can be franchised today, regardless of how profitable it is. However, this does not necessarily mean you should rush out and start franchising your business.

Unfortunately, many franchises that start are destined to fail. One of the main reasons a franchise fails has to do with the entrepreneur involved. Franchising requires trust, honestly, integrity, reliability, motivation, etc. If the business owner does not possess these elements, than the franchise may be doomed for failure. In addition, the person who is franchising the business needs to be competent as well. It goes both ways. No matter how great your concept, unless you have qualified individuals to execute it, nothing will happen.

Another problem with franchising is that the franchisor believes that the project is a do-it-yourself project. Basically, once they are paid the initial fee, they simply wait to see profits. They forget that they need to work side by side with the franchisee. This is instrumental in allowing them to understand how to successfully operate the business model.

Often legal problems get in the way of success. People focus more on the contract than they do on the success of the business. Some people have been known to involve attorneys when it is unnecessary. This can be costly. And, during the initial stages of the deal, it is more important to get the franchise going, rather than focusing on minor contract details.

Lastly, many times franchise expertise is needed. However, franchise management does not think that it is necessary. They assume they are doing a great job and consider it to be successful. And, often, the two parties conflict. This can cause more serious problems, especially when the experts and trying to make the best decisions for everyone.

Although many franchises fail, a lot are successful. If you can properly analyze your objectives and your business concept you will find that your dealings with prospective franchisees will go smoothly. Once you find the right franchisee, work together to build the business. Make sure the relationship is strong. If you do this, you will hopefully avoid some of the pitfalls that come with franchising.
