I Want to Franchise My Small Business - How Do I Know If My Business is Viable?

Many successful small business entrepreneurs dream of the day that they might be able to franchise their business. They love the idea of seeing their logo on other small successful businesses throughout the entire country, and maybe the world. One only has to read Michael Gerber's "E-Myth," to allow such an idea to soak in. Having been a franchisor myself and having started a small business which grew into a national franchise chain, I totally understand how this dream occurs.

Still, not every business model is franchise-able, there are several very important things that you need to consider before you franchise your business. The simpler the business the easier it is to franchise, and by simpler I mean it is easy to train someone how to run the business in a very short amount of time; not more than three weeks. Also it is important that the suppliers you use in your business are available around the country. If you deal with a perishable product it may not be available in other cities and other markets.

Likewise, if your business is weather related, it may not work in some markets. For instance, my franchising company was a mobile car wash, and it didn't work very well in places like Duluth Wisconsin that has many days that are -18°F with wind chill factor. It's almost impossible to wash a car in the middle of an ice storm. If too many days are below freezing level you certainly can't wash a car with water, as it freezes with the soap of the cars as soon as the water touches it.

There are many things you must consider before franchising your business and I hope this will give you a good idea of just some of the important aspects that you must consider before you set out on a mission to fulfill that dream. Please consider all this.
